About
A. Di Paola is a pioneering figure in time-domain astrophysics, specializing in the robotic observation of transient cosmic phenomena, particularly Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and solar magnetic activity. Their most significant contribution is the development and scientific exploitation of the REM (Rapid Eye Mount) telescope, a fast-pointing, fully robotic facility at La Silla Observatory, Chile. Di Paola demonstrated the critical importance of near-infrared (NIR) observations for capturing the prompt afterglow of GRBs, especially those at high redshift where Ly-α absorption obscures optical light. Their work on the REM telescope, detailed in a highly cited 2001 paper (81 citations), established a new paradigm for rapid multi-wavelength follow-up. To enable this science, Di Paola also created the AQuA (Automatic QUick Analysis) pipeline, a groundbreaking software system for real-time data reduction and transient detection, allowing astronomers to observe GRB afterglows within minutes of satellite triggers. More recently, Di Paola has applied their robotic expertise to solar physics with the SAMM (Solar Activity MOF Monitor) telescope, a ground-based instrument for continuous monitoring of solar active regions and magnetic fields, crucial for predicting explosive solar events. This body of work bridges high-energy astrophysics and solar-terrestrial physics, showcasing a career dedicated to building the tools that capture the universe’s most fleeting and energetic moments.
