About
F. Vitali is an Italian astronomer and instrumentation specialist whose career has centered on the design, development, and scientific exploitation of robotic telescopes for the rapid observation of transient astrophysical phenomena, particularly Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Vitali is best known as a key contributor to the Rapid Eye Mount (REM) project — a pioneering 60 cm robotic telescope installed at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile — which broke new ground as the first moderate-aperture facility capable of simultaneously covering the visible and near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range from 0.45 to 2.3 microns. His most cited work (81 citations) laid the scientific foundation for using NIR observations to capture the prompt afterglow of GRBs, including high-redshift events obscured to optical instruments. Beyond science, Vitali made substantial technical contributions, including the development of the REM-IR camera, upgraded multiband visible instrumentation, and sophisticated observing software enabling full autonomous operation.
