About
L. Nicastro is an astrophysicist whose career has been defined by pioneering the robotic, multi-wavelength follow-up of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). As a key architect of the Rapid Eye Mount (REM) telescope project at La Silla, Chile, Nicastro’s major contribution was designing and deploying the first moderate-aperture robotic facility capable of simultaneous optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations. This innovation was critical for capturing the prompt afterglow of GRBs, especially high-redshift events obscured by dust or Ly-α absorption. Nicastro’s work on the REM-IR camera and the ROSS spectrograph provided the astronomical community with a unique, fully automated tool to react within seconds to satellite triggers from Swift and HETE-II. The foundational papers on REM’s design and performance have accumulated over 200 citations, reflecting the facility’s lasting impact on transient astrophysics. Beyond instrumentation, Nicastro contributed to the GLORIA project, a citizen-science network of robotic telescopes, demonstrating a commitment to open-access astronomy and public engagement.
