About
S. Covino is a leading figure in the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), with a career dedicated to capturing the fleeting, early moments of these cosmic explosions. His primary research focus is the prompt optical and near-infrared (NIR) afterglow of GRBs, a critical phase that holds the key to understanding the physics of the bursts and their use as probes of the early universe. Covino’s most significant contribution is his central role in the conception, design, and operation of the Rapid Eye Mount (REM) telescope, a fully robotic, fast-slewing observatory at La Silla, Chile. REM was a pioneering facility, designed to react within seconds to satellite alerts and simultaneously observe GRBs across visible and NIR wavelengths—a capability that was groundbreaking at its inception. His work on REM, documented in highly cited papers (over 80 citations for the primary instrument description), has enabled the community to capture the earliest afterglow phases, including high-redshift events. Covino also contributed to the development of the REM optical slitless spectrograph (ROSS) and the AQuA automatic pipeline for rapid transient detection. More recently, his spectropolarimetry of GRB 191221B, using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), has provided new insights into the magnetic fields and geometry of GRB jets. Through his instrumental ingenuity and observational leadership, Covino has fundamentally advanced our ability to witness and understand the universe’s most luminous explosions.
