About
Che Zhao is pioneering the frontier of soft robotics and smart materials, with a research focus on biomimetic actuators, 4D printing, and adaptive gripping systems. Their most impactful work introduces a gradient four-dimensional (4D) printing method that enables nonuniform, dual-stimuli self-morphing—a breakthrough inspired by biological systems, cited 78 times. This innovation holds transformative potential for drug delivery, biomedical devices, and robotics. Zhao also advances dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) by developing a CaCu₃Ti₄O₁₂/MXene/silicone composite that achieves large actuated strains, addressing key challenges in soft robotics. Their design of a back-drivable rotational series elastic actuator (RSEA) for adaptive grasping demonstrates practical engineering prowess, enabling miniature, efficient robotic grippers. More recently, Zhao has explored water-responsive helical actuators that mimic natural tendrils, offering space-efficient and adaptive solutions for robotic manipulation. With a growing citation record and a portfolio that bridges materials science and mechanical design, Che Zhao is shaping the next generation of intelligent, muscle-like robotic systems.
