About
Alireza Alamdar is a leading roboticist whose work is transforming the landscape of ophthalmic and minimally invasive surgery. His primary research focuses on developing high-precision robotic systems for microsurgical procedures, particularly in retinal surgery and telerobotic surgery. Alamdar’s most significant contributions center on the Steady-Hand Eye Robot (SHER) platform, where he led the optimization and benchtop evaluation of SHER 3.0 for subretinal injection—a procedure critical for treating currently incurable retinal conditions. His work on force and velocity-based puncture detection for retinal vein cannulation has been pivotal, enabling safer, more reliable robotic assistance in delicate in-vivo procedures. With over 100 combined citations from his top papers, Alamdar’s impact is evident in advancing surgical precision beyond human motor limits. He also contributed to the development of the Sina robotic telesurgery system and a novel approach for totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass on beating hearts. Notably, his research on kinematic calibration for delta robots and hybrid calibration methods for surgical robots has set new standards for accuracy in robot-assisted surgery. Alamdar’s achievements position him as a key innovator in the next generation of cooperative and autonomous surgical systems.
