About
Sylwester Bargiel is a leading figure in the development of advanced micro-optical systems, with a primary focus on Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MOEMS) for biomedical imaging. His research centers on the hybrid integration of micro-optical components onto reconfigurable platforms, a key enabler for next-generation endoscopic tools. Bargiel’s most notable contribution is the concept and technology for a swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) endomicroscope, designed for the early detection of neoplastic lesions in human stomach tissue. This system, detailed in his most cited work (12 citations), integrates a vertically aligned Mirau micro-interferometer directly into a measurement probe, representing a significant leap in miniaturized, high-resolution imaging. Beyond this, his foundational work on a reconfigurable silicon micro-optical table (RFS-MOT) established a novel, robotic micro-assembly approach for MOEMS devices, allowing for the precise placement of microlenses and micromirrors onto a generic platform. This pioneering technology platform, which enables rapid prototyping of free-space micro-optics, has been instrumental in advancing the field of integrated photonics for medical diagnostics and sensing.
