About
Luciano Luporini Menegaldo is a Brazilian robotics and biomedical engineering researcher whose work spans industrial inspection robotics, biomechanics, and rehabilitation technology. He is perhaps best known for his pioneering contributions to autonomous robotic systems for the oil and gas industry, particularly his development of wall-climbing mobile robots capable of inspecting the outer hulls of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels — work documented in his most-cited publications, including the SIRUS robot project (2008–2009, accumulating over 50 citations combined). His research addresses the critical challenge of performing nondestructive testing in hazardous offshore environments where human inspection is impractical or dangerous. Menegaldo also made significant early contributions to biped robotics, designing parallel linkage mechanisms for anthropometric robot joints and creating gait-replicating humanoid platforms that laid groundwork for later rehabilitation applications. His underwater riser inspection robot (2013) further extended his expertise to subsea structural monitoring.
