About

K. Ivanov is a leading figure in time-domain astrophysics, specializing in the rapid optical follow-up of transient cosmic events. As a key architect of the MASTER Global Robotic Net, he has pioneered the automated detection and characterization of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), gravitational wave counterparts, and rare stellar explosions. His most cited work (63 citations) details the creation of the Russian segment of this network, which enables synchronous optical and gamma-ray observations. Ivanov’s team achieved a landmark by conducting the first optical observations of the gravitational wave source GW150914 (46 citations), providing crucial electromagnetic context to LIGO’s historic detection. He has also advanced polarimetry of GRB afterglows, revealing early-stage polarization as high as 8% in GRB 150301B (41 citations). Beyond GRBs, Ivanov discovered and characterized the luminous red nova MASTER OT J004207.99+405501.1 in M31 (43 citations), a rare stellar merger event. His work on rapidly identifying optical afterglows within large Fermi GBM error boxes (38 citations) demonstrates the MASTER network’s unique capability for real-time, wide-field transient surveys. With over 250 total citations, Ivanov’s contributions are foundational to multi-messenger astronomy.
