V. Lipunov is a pioneering Russian astrophysicist whose career has been defined by the development and scientific exploitation of the MASTER (Mobile Astronomical System of the Telescope-Robots) Global Robotic Network, a system of automated telescopes distributed worldwide that has fundamentally advanced time-domain astronomy. His most celebrated contribution came in 2017, when MASTER telescopes captured the first optical image of the neutron star merger GW170817 — the historic multimessenger event detected by LIGO/Virgo — earning the landmark paper 227 citations. Lipunov's decade-long effort to build MASTER, chronicled across multiple foundational papers totaling hundreds of citations, created infrastructure capable of responding autonomously to gamma-ray bursts, gravitational-wave alerts, and rare transient phenomena with unmatched speed and sky coverage.
