P. Balanutsa is a pioneering observational astrophysicist whose work centers on the rapid optical follow-up of gravitational-wave sources, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and high-energy neutrino events using the MASTER Global Robotic Net. As a key member of the MASTER collaboration, Balanutsa played a critical role in the first optical detection of the LIGO/Virgo neutron star merger GW170817 (227 citations), capturing the earliest image of its host galaxy, NGC 4993, and providing essential data for multi-messenger astronomy.
