About
Baoyin Liu is a robotics and control systems researcher whose work has made meaningful contributions to the field of mobile robot motion control, with a particular focus on spherical robots and underactuated mechanical systems. Liu's research addresses some of the most challenging problems in robotic locomotion, including trajectory tracking, disturbance rejection, and the control of dynamically unstable equilibrium points unique to spherical robot architectures. Among Liu's most significant contributions is the development of hierarchical sliding-mode control frameworks tailored to spherical robots, whose inner suspension mechanisms present fundamentally different underactuated dynamics compared to conventional mechanical systems. Building on this foundation, Liu introduced extended state observer-based adaptive hierarchical sliding mode control, which has garnered 41 citations and represents the most widely recognized work in the portfolio. Earlier foundational work on adaptive control of underactuated spherical robots (2013, 30 citations) and backstepping-based trajectory tracking for nonholonomic mobile robots (2012, 16 citations) further demonstrate a sustained commitment to solving real-world control challenges with rigorous mathematical approaches. Collectively, Liu's publications reflect a coherent research trajectory advancing robust, disturbance-adaptive control strategies for complex robotic platforms, making this body of work a valuable reference for students and researchers working in nonlinear control and autonomous mobile robotics.
