About

Zhenliang Zheng is a pioneering robotics researcher whose work centers on infrastructure inspection automation, cable-climbing robot design, and bio-inspired mechanical systems. He is perhaps best known as the driving force behind the CCRobot series — a landmark progression of increasingly capable robots engineered for the demanding task of inspecting and maintaining cable-stayed bridge stay cables. Beginning with the biologically inspired CCRobot in 2018, Zheng and his collaborators systematically advanced the platform through five major iterations, each addressing real-world engineering challenges such as obstacle crossing, heavy payload capacity, and high-speed climbing. CCRobot-IV introduced ducted propeller-driven locomotion to navigate cable accessories and helical ribs, while CCRobot-V adopted a silkworm-like cooperative multi-robot strategy for traversing super-long cables with heavy maintenance equipment. His work has collectively garnered over 175 citations, reflecting strong community engagement across robotics and civil infrastructure communities. Beyond mechanical design, Zheng has explored flexible tactile sensing tailored for high-shear robotic applications and developed critical safety and rescue mechanisms to prepare these systems for real-world deployment. His research represents a sustained and coherent vision: transforming bridge maintenance from a hazardous human task into a reliable, autonomous robotic operation.
