About
Yongjiang Xue is a robotics researcher whose work focuses on creating highly versatile, transformable robots that bridge the gap between legged, wheeled, and manipulative capabilities. His most significant contribution is the development of novel leg-wheel transformable platforms, most notably the "Lywal" quadruped robot, which can seamlessly switch between leg-mode for rough terrain, wheel-mode for efficient travel, and a claw-mode for picking up and transporting objects. This work, with 15 citations, demonstrates a key innovation in using a 2-DoF transformable structure to achieve unprecedented multi-functionality in a single platform. Xue has also advanced snake-like robotics by integrating a gripper onto a snake robot’s head, enhancing its ability to explore and manipulate its environment. His work on the RHex-T3 robot further showcases his drive to improve energy efficiency and versatility by enabling multiple locomotion modes. Most recently, his 2025 paper introduces a "rolling vs. swing" gait strategy to dramatically improve the speed and stability of legged robots, challenging conventional locomotion paradigms.
