About

Xianfu Bao is a rising leader in the field of soft robotics and smart materials, with a primary focus on developing high-performance artificial muscles. His research addresses a critical bottleneck in the field: the trade-off between actuation stroke and force generation. In his highly cited 2023 work, "Coiled Polymer Artificial Muscles Having Dual-Mode Actuation with Large Stress Generation" (18 citations), Bao introduced an inexpensive coiled polymer design capable of producing both large tensile strokes and giant force generation—a combination previously difficult to achieve. This breakthrough has significant implications for practical applications in robotics, soft exosuits, and prosthetics. Bao further advanced the field by tackling the cost barrier of carbon nanotube-based muscles. In his second most-cited paper, "Multi‐Stimuli, Large‐Stroke Hybrid Carbon Fiber‐Based Artificial Muscles" (9 citations), he demonstrated a low-cost, silicone-infiltrated carbon fiber alternative that retains multi-stimuli responsiveness and large-stroke actuation. By systematically reducing material costs while maintaining or improving performance, Bao’s work is paving the way for scalable, real-world deployment of artificial muscles, establishing him as a key innovator in next-generation actuation technologies.
