Takeyoshi Dohi is a pioneering figure in medical robotics and image-guided surgical systems, whose career has been defined by the development of innovative robotic technologies that enhance the precision and safety of minimally invasive procedures. His most influential contribution — an MRI-compatible needle insertion manipulator for stereotactic neurosurgery, first published in 1995 and accumulating over 300 citations — broke new ground by enabling robotic assistance within the challenging electromagnetic environment of MRI scanners, a feat that required entirely novel engineering approaches.
