About
Sadjaad Ozgoli is a robotics and control systems researcher whose work spans flexible joint robot control, assistive exoskeleton technology, and intelligent motion planning. He first established his scholarly reputation with a widely cited 2006 survey on flexible joint robot control — now boasting over 150 citations — that synthesized two decades of advances and charted a roadmap for future developments in the field. His early contributions also addressed practical challenges such as actuator saturation, proposing a fuzzy error governor approach to improve real-world robot performance. Over the following decade, Ozgoli pivoted toward a deeply impactful application domain: lower limb exoskeleton robots for individuals with movement disabilities. His research group developed real-time gait generation algorithms capable of handling diverse terrains including slopes, stairs, and dynamic obstacles, and implemented these systems on the Exoped exoskeleton platform. His team further advanced model-free, high-order terminal sliding mode controllers for nonlinear systems and integrated computer vision with deep learning for environment-aware exoskeleton control.
