About

Rainer Palm is a distinguished researcher whose work spans robotics, intelligent control systems, and human-robot interaction, with particular expertise in fuzzy logic, adaptive control, and robot learning. Over more than three decades, Palm has made foundational contributions to the development of fuzzy controllers for robotic systems, beginning with his pioneering 1989 work on sensor-guided robot manipulators and continuing through influential studies on scaling fuzzy controllers using cross-correlation (1995, 42 citations) and adaptive fuzzy sliding-mode control applied to robot manipulators (2001, 52 citations). His robust control methods, including adaptive non-singular terminal sliding mode approaches (2017, 83 citations), have been widely adopted in the control engineering community. Palm has also advanced intuitive robot programming through Programming by Demonstration techniques for industrial manipulators and reaching motions, and contributed significantly to grasp learning for anthropomorphic robotic hands using time-clustering and Takagi-Sugeno modeling.
