About

Nouara Achour is an Algerian robotics researcher whose work centers on autonomous mobile robot navigation, path planning, and perception. Over more than two decades, she has made sustained contributions to some of the field's most fundamental challenges: enabling robots to move safely, efficiently, and intelligently through complex environments. Her early work explored genetic algorithm-based path optimization for mobile robots in constrained environments, earning 20 citations and establishing her as a contributor to bio-inspired computational approaches in robotics. She extended this interest in biological inspiration through a visual memory system mimicking primate brain mechanisms for cognitive map building and scene recognition. Her research also spans practical perception systems, including a real-time moving obstacle detection framework using 2D laser range finders and a tentacle-based avoidance scheme for omnidirectional robots navigating under visibility constraints. Achour has tackled localization and mapping through ICP-SLAM implementation, environment mapping via ultrasonic sensors, and social navigation for tour-guide robots operating alongside humans. Her 2019 framework addressing simultaneous collision and occlusion risks reflects the growing sophistication of her contributions. With over 120 cumulative citations across diverse robotics subfields, her body of work represents a comprehensive and evolving engagement with the grand challenges of autonomous robot navigation.
