About

Molei Wu is a robotics researcher whose work sits at the intersection of biomechanics, actuation, and assistive technology. His primary research areas include variable stiffness actuation, powered prosthetics, and human-robot interaction. Wu’s most notable contribution is the development of the Pneumatic Variable Series Elastic Actuator (2016), a novel approach inspired by human motor control theory that enables stiffness control in robotic systems without relying solely on closed-loop feedback—addressing critical limitations in frequency response and safety for manipulation and human-interactive tasks. This work has garnered 15 citations and laid groundwork for safer, more responsive robotic systems. In parallel, Wu has advanced assistive technology through his work on a low-cost, modular powered transtibial prosthesis (2017). By designing a prosthetic ankle capable of generating the power needed for forward motion—a capability absent in traditional passive devices—he directly addresses a key deficit in below-knee amputee mobility. Though early-stage, this prototype represents a meaningful step toward accessible, high-performance prosthetic solutions. Wu’s research bridges fundamental actuation science with tangible applications in rehabilitation and human augmentation.
