Mohammadreza Bayat is a leading researcher in marine robotics, specializing in autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) localization, navigation, and cooperative control. His major contributions center on solving the critical challenge of underwater positioning in the presence of unknown ocean currents and without reliable GPS. Bayat’s seminal 2015 paper, “Range-Based Underwater Vehicle Localization in the Presence of Unknown Ocean Currents: Theory and Experiments,” with 110 citations, introduced novel observer designs that enable AUVs to accurately estimate their position using only acoustic range measurements, even when currents are unmeasured.
