Michael Swan is a pioneering roboticist whose research centers on autonomous mobility for extreme and unknown environments, with a particular focus on space exploration. His major contributions lie in developing versatile, high-degree-of-freedom robots—most notably the EELS (Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor) snake robot—designed to traverse treacherous terrains like the icy geysers of Enceladus or the subsurface oceans of Europa.
