About

Margherita Mencattelli is pioneering the frontier of autonomous and magnetically-actuated surgical robots, with a focus on transforming minimally invasive procedures in the hardest-to-reach anatomical spaces. Her landmark 2019 work, cited 157 times, demonstrated the first autonomous robotic navigation for intracardiac catheterization—a breakthrough that proved machines can navigate from skin incision to target without human guidance, even in the dynamic environment of a beating heart. She has since introduced an entirely new class of hyper-redundant robots: magnetic ball chains, comprised of permanently magnetized spheres that bend to extreme curvatures under external magnetic fields. These devices promise unprecedented dexterity for endoluminal interventions, from airway balloon dilation to cardiac arrhythmia ablation. In neurosurgery, Mencattelli’s research on robotic instruments compatible with MRI bore environments is enabling imaging-enhanced cranial procedures, while her hybrid tendon-and-ball-chain designs offer enhanced dexterity for complex interventions. With multiple papers from 2021–2024 and growing citation impact, her work is defining the next generation of soft, steerable, and autonomous surgical tools—bringing the surgeon’s hands literally to the tip of the endoscope.
