About
Karl Price is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of surgical robotics and biomedical engineering, whose work is fundamentally redefining what is possible inside the human body. His primary research areas include autonomous surgical navigation, in vivo robotic implants, and MR-conditional robotic systems. Price’s most celebrated contribution is his 2019 paper on autonomous robotic intracardiac catheter navigation, which demonstrated for the first time that a robot could independently navigate from a skin incision to a target site inside the beating heart—a feat previously considered too complex for automation. This work, with 157 citations, has become a cornerstone for the field of autonomous surgery. He has also advanced the science of robotic implants that reside inside the body to restore or enhance biological function, as shown in his 2018 paper on in vivo tissue regeneration. Notably, Price has developed miniaturized continuum tools for the da Vinci system and designed the first MR-conditional robot for transcranial focused ultrasound surgery in infants, offering a noninvasive alternative to brain surgery for newborns. His recent work on using robotics to extend a neurosurgeon’s hands to the tip of an endoscope is poised to transform minimally invasive cranial procedures.
