About

Lirong Xia is a leading figure in Antarctic astronomy, whose work has been pivotal in establishing Dome A as a premier site for observational cosmology. His primary research focuses on the development and deployment of robotic telescopes in extreme environments, with a major contribution being the Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR). As a key member of the 24th Chinese expedition team, Xia helped deploy CSTAR to Dome A in 2008, the highest point on the Antarctic plateau. This pioneering instrument, consisting of four 14.5 cm optical telescopes, produced the first-ever point source catalog from this remote location, a work that has garnered over 40 citations. The success of CSTAR laid the technical and scientific groundwork for subsequent, larger facilities like the Antarctic Survey Telescopes (AST3).
