About
J.A. Somolinos is a robotics and control systems researcher whose work has made significant contributions to the design, modeling, and control of flexible robotic manipulators, as well as impact detection and sensing technologies. Over more than two decades of research, Somolinos has advanced the understanding of lightweight flexible robot arms, particularly in applications where minimizing structural mass and managing environmental collisions are critical priorities. His most influential contributions include the development and experimental validation of a novel three-degree-of-freedom flexible robot arm, explored across multiple landmark studies from 2001 to 2003 that together have accumulated nearly 80 citations. A 2012 study on robust tip trajectory tracking under large payload variations (39 citations) demonstrates his sustained focus on real-world control challenges in compliant robotic systems. Somolinos has also pioneered practical sensing solutions, employing strain gauges and piezoelectric transducers for collision detection and impact localization on metallic structures, work that extends naturally into industrial inspection and structural health monitoring contexts. His broader interests encompass rehabilitation robotics and amorphous sensor materials for advanced robotic applications. Collectively, his research portfolio reflects a career dedicated to bridging theoretical modeling with experimental rigor, producing tools and insights directly applicable to safe human-robot interaction and automated inspection systems.
