About
Helen Greiner is a pioneering roboticist and entrepreneur whose work has shaped the fields of autonomous systems, legged robotics, and field robotics. As a co-founder of iRobot, she helped bring robots from the lab into real-world applications, most notably with the development of autonomous legged underwater vehicles (ALUVs) for mine hunting in the surf zone. Her 2002 paper on this topic, which has garnered 67 citations, introduced inexpensive, crab-like robots capable of operating without central control—a visionary approach to distributed, autonomous swarming long before it became mainstream. Greiner’s early work at MIT, including her 1990 master’s thesis on prehensile robot end-effectors, laid the groundwork for dexterous manipulation. Later, she led efforts to deploy hexrotor robots for hazardous inspections, such as the mock-up exhaust shaft inspection at the DOE’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. With over 30 years of impact, Greiner has not only advanced the science of autonomous systems but also demonstrated how robotics can solve critical challenges in defense, nuclear safety, and underwater exploration.
