A. N. Shectman is a visionary engineer whose research bridges biomimetic robotics and futuristic medical technology. Shectman is best known for pioneering autonomous legged underwater vehicles (ALUVs), a concept detailed in their highly cited 2002 paper (67 citations). Inspired by crab locomotion, these inexpensive, independently operating robots were designed for mine hunting in the challenging surf zone, deploying in large numbers without central control—a paradigm shift in near-land warfare and autonomous swarm robotics.
