Gordon A. Leonard is a leading figure in macromolecular crystallography (MX) and structural biology, whose career at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) has been defined by pioneering automation and beamline innovation. He is best known for spearheading the SPINE standard sample holder, a critical development that enabled robotic sample changers to become a global standard for cryocooled crystals—a contribution cited over 110 times. Leonard’s work extends to the design of the RoboDiff system, which integrates a sample changer directly with the goniometer for highly automated, high-throughput experiments. As a key architect of the MXCuBE3 beamline control software, he helped usher in a new era of efficient, user-friendly data collection.
