About

Andrew A. McCarthy is a leading figure in macromolecular crystallography and biological small-angle X-ray scattering (BioSAXS), with a career centered on advancing synchrotron beamline instrumentation at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). His major contributions include spearheading the transformative upgrade of the BM29 BioSAXS beamline as part of the ESRF’s Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) project, where a new two-pole wiggler dramatically increased brilliance and enabled faster, higher-quality data collection. This work, detailed in a 2022 paper with 59 citations, also integrated an upgraded detector, robot, sample environment, and analysis software, setting a new standard for the field. McCarthy has also been instrumental in the development of the macromolecular crystallography beamlines at ESRF, co-authoring a 2015 status report with 38 citations that outlined their capabilities and impact. His innovative drive extends to sample handling: a 2017 paper with 13 citations introduced a compact, precise sample holder designed to overcome limitations in storage density and positioning accuracy at high-throughput beamlines. Through these achievements, McCarthy has directly enhanced the efficiency and accessibility of structural biology experiments, enabling researchers worldwide to probe the atomic architecture of biomolecules with unprecedented speed and precision.
