About
Clement Sorez is a key innovator in the field of macromolecular crystallography, specializing in the engineering of automated sample-handling systems for synchrotron beamlines. His major contributions focus on overcoming critical bottlenecks in high-throughput structural biology, specifically the limitations of sample holder compatibility and crystal-alignment precision. Sorez led the development of FlexED8, the first member of a fast and flexible sample-changer family, which introduced unprecedented compatibility with multiple sample holder and puck types—a significant departure from the rigid, single-standard systems that previously dominated the field. This work, published in 2017 and garnering 18 citations, directly addresses the need to reduce sample-handling efforts and alignment times. In a parallel effort, Sorez also advanced the design of a compact, precise sample holder that improves storage density and initial crystal-positioning accuracy, a critical factor for modern beamlines where data collection is increasingly automated. Through these contributions, Sorez has helped shape the infrastructure that enables high-throughput structural biology, making synchrotron experiments faster, more flexible, and more accessible to the research community.
