About
Eui-Jung Jung is a robotics researcher whose work spans human-robot interaction, service robotics, and pipeline inspection systems. His most influential contribution is the development of a laser-range-finder-based human tracking and control algorithm for a Marathoner Service Robot (MSR), a paper with 103 citations that enables mobile robots to follow a running human while dynamically avoiding obstacles in unstructured outdoor environments. Jung has also made significant advances in assistive mobility, notably through the JAIST Robotic Walker (JARoW), which uses a two-layered Kalman filter to provide elderly users with intuitive and reliable ambulatory support. His research extends to infrastructure maintenance, where he has designed reconfigurable robots for inspecting indoor pipelines as small as 15 mm in diameter, as well as large-diameter water pipes (900–1200 mm) using Magnetic Flux Leakage sensors. With over 300 total citations across his top ten papers, Jung’s work demonstrates a consistent focus on real-world applications—from marathon training companions to water quality assurance. His innovative use of sensors like Kinect for mobile shopping carts and collaborative ground-air robotic systems further highlights his versatility in creating practical, perception-driven robotic solutions.
