Chengjun Zhu is a leading researcher in surgical robotics, with a focus on restoring tactile perception to robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (RMIS). His work addresses a critical gap in modern surgery: the loss of the surgeon’s sense of touch. Zhu has pioneered the development of novel tactile sensors—including piezoelectric and piezoresistive designs—that can detect tissue stiffness and identify hidden tumors through gentle palpation, eliminating the need for risky manual probing. His dual-mode tactile hardness sensor (22 citations) enables intraoperative tumor detection and tactile imaging, while his autonomous palpation system, guided by deep reinforcement learning and tactile array sensors, plans optimal resection paths.
