About
Carlos Cardeira is a robotics and automation researcher whose work spans mobile robotics, educational technology, and intelligent systems. Based at a Portuguese institution, he has made sustained contributions to both applied and theoretical aspects of autonomous mobile systems, accumulating over 210 citations across his published work. Cardeira's early research helped establish mobile robot competitions as legitimate vehicles for engineering education and research, demonstrating their effectiveness in stimulating innovation across disciplines from artificial intelligence to materials science. His 2005 paper on low-cost mobile robots for engineering education — one of his most cited works — exemplified his commitment to accessible, practical robotics, showing that commercial off-the-shelf components could meaningfully engage students' engineering instincts. His i-Merc project brought these principles into real-world healthcare settings, developing a meal-delivery robot for hospitals that combined navigation with thermal management. On the technical side, Cardeira advanced PCA-based localization methods for mobile robots operating in unstructured environments, later extending these approaches using RGB-D depth maps. His more recent work addresses sensor fusion for attitude estimation and the integration of legacy industrial machinery into IoT ecosystems — a timely contribution to Industry 4.0 challenges. His co-editorship of the ROBOT 2017 Iberian Robotics Conference further underscores his role as a central figure in the Iberian robotics community.
