Atushi Umemura is a leading figure in rehabilitation robotics and bio-inspired actuation systems, with a career dedicated to bridging the gap between human physiology and robotic assistance. His primary research focuses on developing power-assisted rehabilitation devices for patients with upper limb disabilities, and on engineering robotic arms that mimic the sophisticated mechanics of bi-articular muscles. Umemura’s most influential work, a 2009 study on a power-assisted rehabilitation robot arm (28 citations), introduced an upper limb orthosis designed for patients with severe disabilities who retain only small voluntary movements.
