About

Weiming Ba is a pioneering robotics researcher specializing in continuum robots, with a particular focus on their application in aerospace maintenance and constrained-environment manipulation. His work addresses one of the most pressing challenges in aeroengine servicing: enabling in-situ inspection and repair without the costly and time-consuming process of engine disassembly. Ba's most celebrated contribution is the design and validation of an extra slender continuum robot capable of navigating through tight aeroengine inspection ports — a landmark work that has accumulated 184 citations since 2020. Building on this foundation, he pioneered collaborative continuum robot systems, most notably demonstrating two robots working in concert to manipulate flames exceeding 2000°C for thermal spray coating repairs, earning 79 citations. His contributions extend beyond hardware design into control theory, with his fuzzy-logic-based static feedback controller (66 citations) offering elegant solutions to the inherent compliance challenges of tendon-driven systems. Ba has also advanced the field conceptually by reconfiguring continuum arms into parallel manipulators to overcome stiffness limitations, and by developing analytical differential kinematics methods for more precise control. Collectively, his research is reshaping how industry approaches hazardous, confined-space robotic intervention.
