Sandipa Singh is a pioneering roboticist whose work bridges the gap between terrestrial ocean exploration and the future of planetary science. Her primary research focuses on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), acoustic communications, and extreme-environment robotics. Singh’s most celebrated contribution is the development of the *Jaguar* and *Puma* AUVs, which in 2007 became the first robots ever deployed and recovered through Arctic ice at 85°N latitude to search for hydrothermal vents. This landmark work, detailed in her 2009 paper (61 citations), demonstrated the feasibility of under-ice robotic exploration and directly informed NASA’s vision for exploring subsurface oceans on icy moons like Europa and Enceladus.
