About

C. Pontbriand is a pioneering roboticist and polar engineer whose work has fundamentally advanced the ability to explore Earth’s most inaccessible underwater environments—and, by extension, the icy moons of the outer solar system. Their key research areas center on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) designed for extreme sub-ice operations, with a strong emphasis on Arctic and Antarctic deployment. Pontbriand’s major contribution is the development of two groundbreaking platforms: the *Jaguar* and *Puma* AUVs, which in 2007 became the first robots ever deployed and recovered through sea ice at 85°N latitude to search for hydrothermal vents. This work, detailed in their most-cited paper (61 citations), laid the foundation for “extraplanetary under-ice exploration” by proving robotic systems could operate in conditions analogous to Jupiter’s moon Europa.
