About
Mark Noakes is a leading figure in large-scale metal additive manufacturing and telerobotic systems, with a career spanning foundational work in both fields. His research focuses on scaling up wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) to produce industrial-scale metal components, addressing critical challenges in process control, material properties, and multi-robot coordination. Noakes’s most cited work, “Introduction to the design rules for Metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing” (117 citations), established essential guidelines for this emerging technology. He also contributed to the groundbreaking Additive Manufacturing Excavator project, which demonstrated the world’s first 3D-printed excavator at CONEXPO 2017. Earlier in his career, Noakes was instrumental in developing the Trauma Pod, a semi-automated telerobotic surgical system for battlefield care (102 citations), and advanced teleoperated systems for hazardous nuclear decommissioning. His recent work on scalable multi-robot WAAM systems (2023) continues to push the boundaries of production speed and part size. With over 400 total citations, Noakes’s unique blend of expertise in robotics and additive manufacturing has made him a key innovator in both defense and industrial manufacturing.
