About
Kazuhiro Kobayashi’s research bridges the frontiers of autonomous robotics and radio astronomy instrumentation, demonstrating a rare versatility in engineering complex systems. His most impactful work centers on the development of autonomous mobile robots, particularly the “AR Chair” — an articulated steering vehicle presented at the Real World Robotics Challenge 2014 (RWRC) in Tsukuba. This project, detailed in his most-cited paper (11 citations), pioneered a lateral guiding method that enables precise navigation in real-world environments, contributing directly to the advancement of assistive and service robotics. In parallel, Kobayashi has made significant contributions to astrophysical observation as part of the NASCO (NAnten2 Super CO Survey as legacy) project. He is instrumental in developing a new multi-beam receiver and a modernized telescope control system for the NANTEN2 4-meter submillimeter telescope in Chile’s Atacama Desert. This work aims to produce the first all-sky CO data cube of the southern hemisphere, a monumental legacy survey for molecular cloud research. While his citation counts are modest, the dual impact of his work — from practical robotic navigation to large-scale astronomical instrumentation — underscores his role as a builder of transformative tools for both terrestrial and cosmic exploration.
