About

Jimmy Li is a robotics researcher whose work spans marine robotics, multi-robot systems, computer vision, and autonomous environmental monitoring. He is perhaps best known for his foundational contribution to heterogeneous multi-robot systems for ocean science, captured in his highly cited 2012 paper on multi-domain marine monitoring (134 citations), which demonstrated how aerial, surface, and underwater robots could collaborate to assist scientists in inspecting complex marine ecosystems. Building on this foundation, Li has made significant contributions to autonomous coral reef health assessment, developing systems that combine small marine robots with image analysis techniques — including radial basis function SVMs — to evaluate reef ecosystems using natural lighting. His work on underwater multi-robot convoying pioneered visual tracking-by-detection methods, enabling robots to follow one another reliably in unstructured 3D environments, later extended through synthetically trained 3D pose estimators. Li has also explored robot programming paradigms, semantic visual localization under dramatic viewpoint changes, and novel underwater gesture-based communication protocols for radio-denied environments. With over 200 cumulative citations and contributions spanning hardware, perception, and human-robot interaction, Li's research consistently addresses the unique challenges of deploying intelligent robotic systems in demanding, real-world aquatic settings.
