About
Jeremie Ouellet is a robotics researcher whose work centers on the design and control of mechanisms for safe, effective physical human-robot interaction. His most significant contribution lies in the development of novel gravity compensation techniques for serial robots. In his highly cited 2013 paper, Ouellet introduced a pioneering approach to static balancing using remote counterweights connected via a low-pressure hydraulic transmission. This design, implemented on a 7-DOF robot, dramatically reduces the actuator torque required to support the robot’s own weight, enabling safer and more energy-efficient interaction with humans. By employing low-friction diaphragm cylinders, his system achieves the benefits of counterbalancing without the bulk and inertia of traditional methods. This work, which has garnered 39 citations, is foundational for researchers designing intrinsically safe, backdrivable robots for collaborative tasks. Ouellet’s research directly addresses the core challenge of making robots both powerful and gentle, a critical requirement for applications in rehabilitation, assistive technology, and industrial co-robotics.
