About
Hong Hua is a leading innovator in computational imaging and display systems, with a particular focus on creating advanced optical solutions for medical visualization and panoramic imaging. Her research spans wide field-of-view cameras, foveated imaging, and surgical optics. Her seminal 2005 work on a high-resolution panoramic camera, which has garnered 15 citations, introduced a novel design that achieves both wide field-of-view and high resolution from a single viewpoint—a critical advancement for applications in teleconferencing, surveillance, and robot navigation. She further extended this concept with a hemispherical imaging camera in 2009. More recently, Hua has made significant contributions to surgical technology, developing the multi-resolution foveated laparoscope (MRFL). This device, assessed in a 2022 study with surgeons, simultaneously provides high-resolution central vision and wide peripheral awareness, improving situational awareness during laparoscopic procedures. Her work bridges fundamental optical design with practical clinical needs, demonstrating how computational imaging can enhance human performance in complex tasks.
