About
Casey Machado is a pioneering roboticist and ocean engineer whose work has dramatically expanded humanity’s ability to explore the most inaccessible regions of the ocean. Machado’s primary research areas center on the design and development of advanced underwater robotic systems, with a particular focus on hybrid remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for extreme environments. Machado’s most significant contribution is the creation of Nereid-UI, a revolutionary remotely operated underwater vehicle specifically engineered for oceanographic access under ice. This vehicle, detailed in a 2014 paper with 28 citations, enables real-time human teleoperation in polar regions—including the ice-ocean interface and under-ice water columns—that were previously considered impossible to reach. Complementing this, Machado’s 2013 work on an un-tethered ROV (20 citations) pioneered a hybrid ROV/AUV design that allows for routine deep-sea access and intervention without a physical tether, blending the strengths of both platforms. These innovations have made Machado a key figure in polar and deep-sea robotics, with their designs directly enabling new scientific discoveries in climate-critical regions.
