About

Adrien E. Desjardins is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of medical robotics, interventional imaging, and fetal surgery. His work focuses on developing novel sensing and actuation technologies to make minimally invasive procedures safer and more effective. A central contribution is his advancement of all-optical ultrasound—a technique that uses light to both generate and receive ultrasound, enabling integration into extremely small, flexible instruments. He has demonstrated this technology in robotic systems for fetal surgery, where his team created a multi-modal endoscope combining optical ultrasound with white-light imaging, and for large-area scanning using robotic manipulators. Desjardins has also made significant strides in objective skills assessment for endovascular and transcatheter procedures, analyzing catheter manipulation to quantify technical performance. His research on low-field actuating magnetic elastomers further expands the toolkit for wireless biomedical devices. With his most cited work on catheter manipulation analysis in TAVI accumulating over 40 citations, Desjardins’s contributions are shaping the future of robot-assisted, image-guided interventions, promising enhanced precision and safety for patients undergoing complex surgeries.
