About
Zihang Sun is a rising researcher at the forefront of bio-inspired soft robotics and advanced flexible electronics. His work focuses on two key areas: developing novel actuation mechanisms for soft robots and creating high-performance materials for wearable sensing. In his notable 2024 study on an inchworm-inspired soft robot, Sun ingeniously leveraged Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuation to achieve precise, controllable motion, drawing direct inspiration from biological locomotion. This work, which has already garnered 14 citations, addresses fundamental challenges in soft robot design by balancing structural simplicity with effective movement characteristics. More recently, in 2025, Sun tackled a critical bottleneck in flexible electronics: the trade-off between high sensitivity and wide strain range. By engineering a CB/CNT/PDA/TPU conductive fiber membrane, he developed a flexible strain sensor that simultaneously achieves both properties, a breakthrough with significant implications for wearable devices and biological detection. Though early in his career, Sun’s dual contributions to bio-inspired design and material innovation demonstrate a clear trajectory toward impactful, application-driven research in soft robotics and smart materials.
