About
Zhongming Xia is pioneering the next generation of soft, intelligent materials for human-machine interfaces (HMIs), with a focus on ultrasoft hydrogels that bridge the gap between mechanical compliance and high-performance sensing. His major contributions lie in developing gradient foaming and rapid gelation techniques to create hydrogels that are simultaneously ultrasoft, crack-resistant, and highly sensitive—properties traditionally at odds with one another. In his highly cited 2024 work (72 citations), Xia introduced a gradiently foaming hydrogel with stop holes, enabling highly deformable, crack-resistant conformal HMIs. Building on this, his 2025 study (19 citations) leveraged MXene-assisted rapid gelation and foaming to regulate charge accumulation and dissipation at electrical double layers, significantly enhancing tactile sensing capability.
