Wenteng Hou is pioneering the next generation of soft, intelligent materials for human-machine interfaces (HMIs), with a focus on gradient hydrogels that bridge the gap between mechanical compliance and electronic functionality. Hou’s major contributions lie in engineering ultrasoft, foamed hydrogels that are both highly deformable and crack-resistant, addressing a critical trade-off in wearable electronics. In their 2024 work, “Gradiently Foaming Ultrasoft Hydrogel with Stop Holes,” Hou achieved a remarkable combination of softness and mechanical robustness, enabling conformal, sensitive tactile sensing—a breakthrough that has already garnered 72 citations. Building on this, Hou’s 2025 study introduced MXene-assisted rapid gelation and foaming, creating gradient hydrogels that regulate charge accumulation and dissipation at electrode interfaces, significantly enhancing tactile sensing capability for next-generation HMIs.
