About
Zhao Chao is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of soft robotics, intelligent materials, and biomedical engineering. His work focuses on developing soft actuators with embodied intelligence—systems that integrate sensing, actuation, and control without complex external hardware. In his highly cited 2021 study (95 citations), Zhao introduced a novel method for magnetically printing liquid metal into soft actuators, enabling them to perceive and respond to their environment autonomously. This breakthrough paves the way for safer, more adaptive robots capable of intuitive human-robot interaction. Beyond robotics, Zhao has made significant contributions to public health technology. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led the development of a highly automated mobile laboratory for on-site molecular diagnostics (37 citations), drastically reducing turnaround times for pathogen detection and enabling rapid community screening. This work demonstrates his commitment to translating cutting-edge research into real-world solutions. With over 130 combined citations and a growing portfolio of interdisciplinary innovations, Zhao Chao is shaping the future of perceptive soft machines and accessible diagnostic systems.
