About

Yuxuan Liao is pioneering the intersection of soft robotics and advanced manufacturing, with a focus on creating next-generation actuators, sensors, and microfluidic devices. Their major contributions include the development of an origami-inspired soft twisting actuator—a breakthrough that addresses the critical need for torsional motion in soft robotics, enabling delicate manipulation and inspection in confined spaces. This work has garnered 80 citations, underscoring its impact on the field. Liao has also advanced flexible electronics through a novel femtosecond laser-activated deposition method for fabricating flexible metal electrodes directly on PDMS, a key step toward low-cost, mask-free human–machine interfaces (38 citations). Additionally, their self-shrinking soft demoulding technique enables the fabrication of complex, high-aspect-ratio microchannels (31 citations), with applications in soft robotics, wearable sensors, and organs-on-a-chip. More recently, Liao introduced flow casting for geometrically complex, multifunctional soft shells (8 citations). Collectively, Liao’s work is shaping the future of soft, adaptable devices that bridge the gap between rigid electronics and biological systems.
